This is a condition that causes severe stomach ache. It is most common in babies between the ages of two and six months. Attacks can vary in length, sometimes lasting for several hours.
During an attack the baby screams and is often inconsolable, drawing its knees up over its stomach as though it had stomach ache.
Effective treatments exist in homeopathy, herbal and Chinese medicine. The herb fennel is said to have a relaxing and calming effect. Weaning a baby too early increases the chances of colic. Sucking is a comfort for colicky babies and provides a distraction from the pain. Rhythmic rocking or walking with the baby can also be soothing.
