Cold Sores

What is Cold Sores?

Cold Sores are caused by a virus known as herpes simplex. The virus is transmitted orally or via respiratory inhalation and produces infection in the mouth and on the skin. It remains dormant in the nerve groupings and can recur during periods of stress or illness. Cold sores are extremely common and harmless. Most clear up within a few days. They can, however, be transmitted by contact such as kissing and sharing towels or other oral contact such as sharing of cutlery, toothbrushes etc.

Signs & Symptoms of Cold Sores

Signs and symptoms of cold sores include sores on the mouth or in the mouth or gums and a tingling or itchiness around the lips.

How can Cold Sores be treated?

Avoid foods such as almonds, bacon, carob, peanuts, seeds and cereals which contain the amino acid, arginine, which is believed to help growth of the herpes simplex virus. Direct sunlight should also be avoided. The supplement Lysine appears to slow replication of the virus.
