Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition which affects the oil-secreting glands in the skin, causing them to become clogged and inflamed or infected. These glands are located in greatest concentrations on the face, back, shoulders and chest.

Acne is the skin’s response to the hormone testosterone, which may be contained in normal levels in the blood but the skin reacts in an abnormal way to its presence. Many people will suffer from at least a few acne lesions at some stage. The extent of suffering will range from person to person. Some suffer into their 40s. Acne is a common occurrence in women just prior to their monthly menstruation.

Signs & Symptoms of Acne

Acne is associated with increased oil production and, as a result, sufferers will often complain of the greasiness of their skin. Certain types of acne can be painful and in the case of nodules, may become tender and result in scarring.

Acne lesions occur in many different forms. The most common are comedones, commonly known as blackheads (given the colour that these lesions become on exposure to air), whiteheads and papules (the red coloured inflamed areas of infection).

How can Acne be treated?
